asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when he intends to make recommendations in respect of appointments to the office of local commissioner in accordance with Section 23(4) of the Local Government Act 1974.

I hope to do so within the next few weeks, after I have consulted the body representing authorities subject to investigation.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when members of the public and hon. Members of this House may refer questions of alleged maladministration in local government, both in Greater London and outside, to the new local government ombudsman.

The procedure applies to maladministration which is alleged to have occurred on or after 1st April 1974. The names of the local commissioners, their areas of responsibility and the addresses of their offices will be published as soon as possible.
