HC Deb 25 March 1974 vol 871 cc56-7W
Miss Bothroyd

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will list the various nursing categories and the approximate cost of training a nurse in each category.

Dr. Owen

The major nursing categories are State Registered Nurse, State Enrolled Nurse, Health Visitor and District Nurse. Expenditure on teaching and support staff, lecture and other fees, teaching equipment, text books, stationery and travelling expenses was estimated in 1973–74 at about £300 for training an SRN and £200 for an SEN. To this must be added other costs which cannot be separately identified, such as accommodation and a proportion of the training allowances, which vary according to age and type of training and which also include payment for work done for the hospital. Health visitors first qualify as SRNs, and district nurses as SRNs or SENs, and no average figure is available for their extra training.
