§ Mr. Bishopasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action is being taken by Her Majesty's Government to aid and finance research into aircraft noise prevention on the ground.
§ Mr. MeacherI have been asked to reply to the latter Question.
Her Majesty's Government are financing programmes of research on aircraft noise, including engine and airframe aspects; together with related examination of the operational procedures, these 43W activities are well directed towards the reduction of noise on the ground. The research work is carried out in industry, in Government R. and D. establishments and in universities. Expenditure in 1973–74 is expected to be £1.7 million. In addition, a new noise test facility has recently been completed at the National Gas Turbine Establishment at a cost of approximately £2 million. Her Majesty's Government are also contributing about £0.7 million during 1973–74 towards the costs of programmes in industry aimed at demonstrating the technology which could be applied to future engines, including quieter versions of the M45H and RB211 engines.
