HC Deb 18 March 1974 vol 870 cc37-8W
Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what is the current total manpower in the Territorial Army; and what was the number at June 1970.

Mr. William Rodgers

The current total strength of the Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve is 54,419. The corresponding figure for June 1970 was 48,035.

Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will give details of training given in the Territorial Army relating to crowd and riot control, urban warfare and related matters.

Mr. William Rodgers

Trained soldiers of the Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve are given instruction in the principles of internal security in a general war situation.

Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what was the cost of recruitment per recruit to the Territorial Army in the year prior to June 1970, compared to the most recent year for which figures are available.

Mr. William Rodgers

The cost of recruiting and publicity for the Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve in 1969–70 was £4.50 per recruit. In 1972–73 the corresponding cost was £5.50 per recruit, making no adjustment for inflation.
