HC Deb 28 June 1974 vol 875 cc565-6W
Mr. Body

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) whether he will introduce legislation to repeal Section 9 of the Metropolitan Streets Act 1867 so far as it relates to the advertising on horseback or on foot of political meetings;

(2) whether he will introduce legislation to govern the exercise of discretion by the police authorities in London in prohibiting the advertising of public meetings to be addressed by Privy Councillors and hon. Members of this House.

Mr. Roy Jenkins

I understand that the Commissioners of Police for the City of London and of the Metropolis will normally be prepared to grant permission, for the purpose of Section 9 of the Metropolitan Streets Act 1867, for the distribution of advertising leaflets for noncommercial purposes. I do not consider that legislation is required.
