HC Deb 28 June 1974 vol 875 cc567-8W
Mr. David Mitchell

asked the Secretary of State for Industry what profit or loss was made by the Post Office on its operations in the last financial year; and what returns this represents on the assets employed in the business.

Mr. Benn

This information will appear in the Post Office's Report and Accounts for 1973–74, which will be laid before Parliament.

Mr. Marks

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if, in view of the shortage of envelopes, he will give a general direction to the Post Office to receive election material in bulk from candidates at future general elections, and to deliver them according to submitted lists.

Mr. Benn

The Post Office has already recognised the shortage of envelopes by amending its regulations to allow electoral communications to be sent as addressed folders. If proposals with regard to delivery according to submitted lists were to come forward I have no doubt the Post Office would consider them.
