HC Deb 28 June 1974 vol 875 c47W
Mr. David Price

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is her estimate of the number of persons in Great Britain who are very severely, severely or appreciably handicapped, using the same definition of these terms as those used by Amelia Harris in Handicapped and Impaired in Great Britain, Social Survey Division, Office of Population Censuses and Surveys.

Mr. Alfred Morris

Applying the incidence of handicap for age and sex in this report to the mid-1974 population, it is estimated that the current number aged 16 or over living at home are:

Very severely handicapped 170,000
Severely handicapped 380,000
Appreciably handicapped 660,000

Comparable statistics for those living in residential accommodation are not available.
