HC Deb 28 June 1974 vol 875 c560W
Mr. Adam Butler

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the average cost, in terms of subsidy through taxation and rates, of a council house; and how this compares with the cost of privately mortgaged accommodation, in terms of tax relief on the average mortgage.

Mr. Freeson

On the basis of the latest available information, the relevant figures for England and Wales in 1973–74 are as follows:

  1. 1. Average subsidy, from the. Exchequer and from rate fund contributions, for a council house:£89.30;
  2. 2. Average tax relief or option mortgage subsidy per mortgagor:£101.50.
