§ Mr. Trotterasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total annual expenditure on recruiting for the police service in England and Wales; how much of this expenditure is incurred on advertising; and what is the approximate expenditure on advertising per recruit.
§ Dr. SummerskillWhile we do not have details of expenditure by police authorities, total central and local expenditure on recruitment to the police service is thought to be of the order of £1 million a year, most of which is spent on advertising. Since much of this is long-term, it cannot appropriately be related to the number of recruits in a particular period.
