HC Deb 25 June 1974 vol 875 c433W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total annual expenditure on recruiting for the police service in England and Wales; how much of this expenditure is incurred on advertising; and what is the approximate expenditure on advertising per recruit.

Dr. Summerskill

While we do not have details of expenditure by police authorities, total central and local expenditure on recruitment to the police service is thought to be of the order of £1 million a year, most of which is spent on advertising. Since much of this is long-term, it cannot appropriately be related to the number of recruits in a particular period.
