asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) on what date she expects that the committee of inquiry under Lord Halsbury will report on nurses and paramedical staff's pay and conditions;

(2) how long she expects to take to consider the findings of the Halsbury Committee;

(3) what are the precise terms of reference of the Halsbury Committee.

This is an independent inquiry set up with the consent of both sides of the Nurses and Midwives Whitley Council. Its terms of reference areto examine the pay structure and levels of remuneration and related conditions of service of nurses and midwives covered by the Nurses and Midwives Whitley Council with particular reference to the current claim".

I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to the hon. Member for Oswestry (Mr. Biffen) on 24th June about the date of the report. It will be considered with all speed when it is received.

I am discussing with those concerned the relevance of the inquiry to certain professions whose pay has traditionally moved with that of nurses.
