HC Deb 24 June 1974 vol 875 cc313-4W
20. Mr. Edwin Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many new jobs have been created in the South Yorkshire intermediate area over each of the past three years; and if he will make a statement on what plans he has to bring more jobs into the district over the next three years.

Mr. Heffer

In the area of the new metropolitan county of South Yorkshire, industrial development certificates were issued in the years 1971 to 1973 which were expected to create at least 10,000 new jobs. As I have already announced, we intend to introduce a new Industry Bill to give us wider powers to promote industrial expansion but, in the meantime, the system of incentives contained in the Industry Act 1972 will continue to be applied which in itself will continue to promote more jobs in the area.
