Mental illness 0.4 0.7 0.6 1.2 1.8
Mental handicap (2) 5.9 6.9 6.4 7.5 7.9
Note (1): For 1969–70 and 1970–71 only, the totals include the cost of sites and equipment which at that time was subject to key sector control. From 1971–72 the key sector which is subject to central control comprises new building, and purchases of existing buildings with the land on which they stand, for social services purposes.
Note (2): For 1969–70 and 1970–71, the figures for mental handicap include expenditure on junior training centres (now special schools).

Note (4): No comparable figures are available for 1972–73 or 1973–74 because of changes in the analysis of local authorities' expenditure on the personal social services. The amount spent in 1972–73 on services specifically for the mentally ill and mentally handicapped was £22.3 m. but this does not include the cost of social work services, administration and some other services such as holidays which cannot be apportioned between particular groups of users. Figures for 1973–74 are not yet available.
