HC Deb 21 June 1974 vol 875 cc277-8W
Mr. Money

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) whether, in the light of recent developments, he has held consultations with the Standing Commission on Museums and Galleries with regard to safety arrangements for works of art in public collections;

(2) which bodies and individuals he has recently consulted in connection with the safety of works of art in public collections.

Mr. Hugh Jenkins

I am in consultation with those most closely concerned with security. The Government's direct responsibility is limited to certain of the national collections. Advice is available from my Department to all the national institutions. I am, of course, greatly concerned by damage to and thefts of works of art in public and private collections generally. Responsibility for security rests with trustees, local authorities and others who administer the collections. The Government are anxious that those concerned should take all practicable measures consonant with the primary purpose of display. Advice is provided by the police.
