§ Sir Nigel Fisherasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will consider the wish of the Turks and Caicos Islands to form an association with Canada.
§ Miss Joan LestorAny official Canadian involvement in the future of the Turks and Caicos Islands is a matter for the Canadian Government. We should, of course, be ready to discuss with that Government any proposals they might make. However, in a statement240W in the Canadian House of Commons on 10th April 1974 the Canadan Secretary of State for External Affairs stated his Government's view that a proposal for formal association with Canada made by the Elected Members of the Islands' State Council in a petition to the British Government should not, in fairness to all, be pursued. A copy of the relevant Canadian Official Report is available in the Library.
