HC Deb 20 June 1974 vol 875 cc212-3W
25. Mr. Ronald Atkins

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what percentage of British hotels and boarding houses has fire safety certificates; and what action he proposes to take against those without certificates.

Dr. Summerskill

On 31st December 1973 about 60 per cent. of the hotels and boarding-houses in England and Wales had applied for fire certificates under the Fire Precautions Act 1971; about 13 per cent. had been inspected; and about 1 per cent. had received certificates. The enforcement of the Act is a matter for the fire authorities, who are taking steps to deal with hotels and boarding-houses which have not yet applied for certificates.
