asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what consideration he is giving to construction of east-west link roads between the A19 and the A1 in the county of Durham and the provision of a southern bypass to Seaham from the A19.

A scheme linking the A19 trunk road at Peterlee to the A1(M) is included in the Department's principal road preparation list. The Durham County Council will now be dealing with it under its transportation policy and programme. I understand that the county has proposals in mind for a non-principal road link with A19 to the south of Seaham.
