HC Deb 19 June 1974 vol 875 c158W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will show the total value of agricultural production in 1973 per head of those engaged full-time in the industry; and if he will compare the figure with that for the value of output per head in the coal mining industry also in 1973.

Mr. Buchan

The value of gross agricultural production per head of those engaged full time in the industry is estimated at £6,700 in 1972–73. The value of production per man engaged in coal-mining—excluding opencast mining—is estimated at about £3,300 for the financial year 1972–73.

Estimates of net product per head in each industry do, however, provide a more meaningful comparison. Net product—excluding stock appreciation—per full-time man equivalent for agriculture is estimated at £1,985; net product per employee in coal mining in 1972 is estimated at £2,140. Comparative figures for later years are not at present available.
