§ Mr. Fauldsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will now withdraw the 1971 settlement proposals rejected by the Africans of Zimbabwe since they are now out of date.
§ Miss Joan LestorThe 1971 proposals have been overtaken. Like those of "Tiger" and "Fearless" they were rejected at the time and are now part of the negotiating history. We have made it clear that any new settlement terms must enjoy the support of the African majority and that the Africans must play a major part in working them out.
§ Mr. Fauldsasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what discussions he intends to hold in international organisations to strengthen the imposition of economic sanctions against the régime in South Rhodesia.
§ Miss Joan LestorMinisters are currently examining ways in which sanctions might be made more effective. We will inform the United Nations Sanctions Committee of the results of our examination.
128WMy right hon. Friend raised the question of sanctions with the Foreign Ministers of the Nine in the political co-operation framework on 10th and 11th June. Ministers decided to establish a working party at official level to examine ways in which sanctions might be more effectively enforced.
