HC Deb 18 June 1974 vol 875 cc102-3W
Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science, of the number of young people who leave school to go into employment, how many and what percentage are released for further education.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave to a Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Luton, East (Mr. Clemitson) on 23rd May 1974.—[Vol. 874, c. 242–243.]

Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps are taken to ensure that employers are made aware of the value of further education facilities.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

There is a diversity of arrangements which serve this purpose. For example, locally, colleges provide varied publicity material, employer representatives sit on college governing bodies and there is much personal contact between college staff and staff in industry. Regionally, the regional advisory councils and their committees assemble a broad range of interest and experience. Nationally, bodies including the Manpower Services Commission, the Trades Union Congress and the Confederation of British Industry have wide and continuous relationships with the education system.

Mr. Moonman

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make a statement on the education of the 16 to 19 years age group as a whole.

Mr. Gerry Fowler

My right hon. Friend has explained on a number of recent occasions the importance he attaches to this part of our education system and has expressed his willingness to receive and consider views. The issues will require much study and consultation before decisions can be reached, and it would therefore be premature to make a statement at this time.
