HC Deb 18 June 1974 vol 875 cc116-7W
Mr. Michael Hamilton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if any use has yet been made of the extended powers under Section 46 of the Finance Act 1973 to accept collections of importance to the national heritage for public display.

Dr. Gilbert

Yes. I am glad to announce that the Government have accepted an offer of pre-eminent archaeological material from the Pitt-Rivers Collection, including materials excavated by General Pitt-Rivers in Cranborne Chase. The Government have accepted as a condition of the offer that all the material should be transferred to a single collection. The Minister responsible for the Arts will make an announcement on this aspect when the arrangements for transfer have been completed. The cost to the National Land Fund will be £18,000.
