HC Deb 30 July 1974 vol 878 c137W
Mr. Wiggin

asked the Minister for the Civil Service what salaries are currently being paid to recruit secretary/typists to the staff of Ministers and top civil servants.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

Salary on recruitment to the grade of personal secretary can vary from £1,672 to £2,134 per annum outside of London, dependent upon standards of proficiency in both typing and shorthand/audio, and upon relevant experience. Personal secretaries in central London also receive a London weighting allowance of £228 per annum. To provide assistance to more senior civil servants, secretaries in the grade of senior personal secretary are employed. This is normally a promotion, not a recruitment grade, and salaries in central London, inclusive of London weighting, vary from £2,220 to £3,007 per annum according to typing and shorthand proficiencies and length of service.
