HC Deb 30 July 1974 vol 878 c178W
Mr. Newens

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if she will make a statement on the development of new methods of detecting cancer at an early stage by means of blood tests; and if she will ensure that every possible step is taken, together with the provision of the necessary public money, to make this service generally available throughout Britain as soon as possible, if it is considered this will assist the struggle against the disease.

Dr. Owen

A considerable amount of research is currently being undertaken into the early detection of cancer by means of blood tests. The tests being developed are still very much at the experimental stage and none of them is suitable for introduction as a general service. If a reliable test of this kind does become available I shall then consider its value in tackling this disease and, if appropriate, the steps required to assist its general introduction.
