HC Deb 29 July 1974 vol 878 cc64-5W
Mr. Trotter

asked the Chairman of the House of Commons (Services) Committee whether he will arrange to increase the publicity given to fire precautions in the Palace of Westminster and, in particular, (a) to send an appropriate notice to Members and persons regularly employed in the palace, (b) to arrange for an appropriate notice to be prominently displayed, such notice to include details of the exits to be used, and (c) to display prominently on each fire extinguisher whether it is safe to use it on electrical fires.

Mr. Bottomley

Yes. It is proposed that:

(a) when the new fire alarm system is installed in the autumn a fire notice will be issued for inclusion in every Palace of Westminster telephone directory. Attention will be drawn to this in the all-party notice and heads of departments will also be informed;

(b) notices are clearly displayed at all fire positions. These contain instructions relating to alternative exits where available; and

(c) the fire notices, situated wherever there is a fire extinguisher, clearly state that water or foam should not be used on live electrical apparatus.
