asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what allowances or expenses are now permitted to be claimed by members of a community health council.

Dr. Owen

Members of community health councils may claim travelling and other allowances, including compensation for loss of remunerative time where appropriate. The present rates of allowances are as follows:

Financial loss allowance
Period exceeding four hours Up to £5.50
Period less than four hours Up to £2.75
Mileage allowance
Car exceeding 1750cc 6.2p per mile
Car exceeding 1000cc 5.7p per mile
Car exceeding 500cc 4.6p per mile
Night absence allowance
Up to 30 days £8.65 per night or £9.50 per night (four miles Charing Cross)
Day absence allowance

(a) Period exceeding five hours but not exceeding eight hours 0.66p
(b) Period exceeding eight hours 1.45
(c) Period exceeding 12 hours on a journey commencing before the member could reasonably be expected to have breakfast at home 2.11
