HC Deb 25 July 1974 vol 877 cc562-3W
Mr. Adam Butler

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the powers possessed by local authorities to assist sporting activities; and if he will take steps to encourage authorities to use these powers to the full.

Mr. Denis Howell

The main power is given in Section 4 of the Physical Training and Recreation Act 1937. Further powers are provided in a number of other Acts. Available evidence suggests that local authorities are giving more priority to sport and recreation than ever before. In the prevailing economic climate I hope they will concentrate upon getting value for money by ensuring that sports facilities, whether public or voluntary, are fully utilised.
