§ 32. Mr. Donald Stewartasked the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps he is taking to combat the damage of pollution of the coast by Japanese seaweed; and if he has consulted his French counterpart on this matter.
§ Mr. OakesI have no evidence at present that this seaweed, which has been found only in the Portsmouth-Isle of Wight area, is causing significant damage. Developments are being closely watched, and we are awaiting a report from the local working party of interested bodies. We have had no occasion to consult our French colleagues and they have not approached us.
