HC Deb 23 July 1974 vol 877 cc454-5W
Mr. Temple-Morris

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, in view of greatly increased costs, whether he will consider exempting from taxation the travel allowances granted to local government offices after reorganisation to cover extra distance travelled to work; whether he will make a statement, and further, whether he will consider extending such allowances to cover the whole of the journey travelled.

Dr. Gilbert

My right hon. Friend has considered this suggestion carefully but has concluded that it would not be right to single out these allowances for special tax relief. The scope of the allowances is a matter for local authorities to settle through the normal negotiating machinery.
