HC Deb 22 July 1974 vol 877 c342W
Sir Frederic Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he will institute a referendum in the Falkland Isles, as arranged in Gibraltar and Ulster, on the political and constitutional future of the inhabitants.

Miss Joan Lestor

The Falkland Islanders desire no change in their present British status and Her Majesty's Government have made it clear that there will be no such change against the islanders' wishes. A referendum at this stage would serve no useful purpose.
