HC Deb 17 July 1974 vol 877 c170W
Mr. Fernyhough

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what would be the cost to public funds of abolishing television licences and financing the BBC out of general taxation.

Dr. Summerskill

The estimated provision for the BBC's United Kingdom services in 1974–75 is £148 million. This represents the estimated total of licence revenue £161 million—less expenses of collection—£11½ million—and costs of interference investigation work—£1½million.
