§ LORD O'HAGANasked Her Majesty's Government:
What controls over the lead content of petrol are now in force; and what plans they have to strengthen those controls.
§ LORD GARNSWORTHYThe petroleum industry complies voluntarily with a British Standard on Petrol for Motor Vehicles which at present specifies a maximum content of 0–64 grams per litre. As announced on July 2, that figure is to be reduced to 0–55 grams per litre by November 1 next by an amendment of the Standard. Clause 70 of the Control of Pollution Bill gives the Secretary of State power to make regulations prescribing the maximum lead content and the position will be further reviewed next year when more information about the trend in petrol consumption and the health aspects may be available.
