asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will state (a) the total population of women over 18 years of age in the United Kingdom, (b) the number gainfully employed and (c) the number belonging to a trade union.

The latest estimate of total population of women over 18 years of age in the United Kingdom, for June 1973, is 21,056,000.

The number in the employed labour force is available only for females aged 15 years and over; the estimate for June 1973 is 9,271,000. The corresponding estimate of population of females aged 15 and over is 22,237,000. At the end of 1972, the total female membership of trade unions known to have their head offices in the United Kingdom, hut excluding members of overseas branches, was 2,877,000.
