asked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what was the increase in retail prices last month and the month before; and how this compares with the largest increase in retail prices in a single month since records were established.

From March until April 1974 the Retail Price Index rose by 3.4 per cent. In May the monthly increase was 1.4 per cent. The previous largest monthly increase in the retail price index was 2.1 per cent. between March and April 1971.
