Mr. Skeet

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will state (a) the total population of men over 18 years of age in the United Kingdom, (b) the number gainfully employed, and (c) the number belonging to a trade union.

Mr. John Fraser

The latest estimate of total population of men over 18 years of age in the United Kingdom, for June 1973, is 19,164,000.

The number in the employed labour force is available only for males aged [...]5 years and over; the estimate for June 1973 is 15,643,000. The corresponding estimate of population of males aged 15 and over is 20,414,000. At the end of 1972, the total male membership of trade unions known to have their head offices in the United Kingdom, but excluding members of overseas branches, was 8,365,000.
