HC Deb 03 July 1974 vol 876 cc167-8W
66. Mr. Stephen Ross

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether, in view of the effect inflation is having on the finances of local authorities, he will now consider as a matter of urgency proposing a supplementary rate support grant; and if he will make a statement.

70. Mr. Critchley

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will sanction the payment of an emergency provision from central funds to enable local authorities to contain their rate call within a maximum percentage increase which should be considerably lower than some of those now demanded from rural ratepayers in particular, as a result of Government policy.

Mr. John Silkin

We are considering the situation in the light of the debate in the House on 27th June.

72. Mr. Eyre

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what plans he has to set up a public inquiry into the system of local government finance; and if he will give details of membership, terms of reference and the date of the first sitting.

Mr. John Silkin

I have nothing to add to the statement my right hon. Friend made to the House on 27th June on this issue.
