HC Deb 01 July 1974 vol 876 cc40-1W
Mr. Cledwyn Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many working days were lost as a result of industrial disputes in the three months from 1st March 1974; and what were the figures for the comparable periods in 1971, 1972 and 1973.

Mr. Booth

In the three months March to May 1974, 3,607,000 working days were lost as a result of industrial stoppages. Comparable figures for 1971, 1972 and 1973 were 3,267,000, 2,384,000 and 2,301,000 respectively. The figure for March to May 1974 is provisional.

Sir Frederic Bennett

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of man-hours lost in the last two years have been from strikes in nationalised and private sectors respectively.

Mr. Booth

Information for years prior to 1973 is not readily available and could be provided only at disproportionate cost. From the beginning of 1973 stoppages in the public sector have been identified separately and the analyses will be available in a few 'week's time. One of the groups for which separate figures will be compiled is public corporations.
