Mr. Cryer

asked the Lord President of the Council what is the period of time that the fire alarm system of the Palace of Westminster has been out of order.

Mr. Edward Short

There is not yet any automatic fire alarm system operating within the Palace of Westminster. At present the telephone system is used to alert policemen and custodians throughout the Palace who then relay the warning. Notices of the drill to be followed in the event of fire are displayed in the Palace of Westminster at fire hose reel positions.

asked the Lord President of the Council if he will give an estimate of the likely time needed to put the fire alarm system at the Palace of Westminster into working order.

An automatic fire alarm system is being installed at the Palace of Westminster at the moment. It is hoped that the alarm system will be installed and operating by the autumn.
