HC Deb 31 January 1974 vol 868 c164W
Mr. Elystan Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what steps he has taken within his Department over the last three years to encourage the more extensive use of the Welsh language.

Mr. Peter Thomas

I have taken positive and wide-ranging steps to encourage more extensive use of the Welsh language. Many of these are described in successive editions of "Cymru: Wales", issued annually by my Department. Among the measures I have taken since the last edition was published has been the major step of setting up the Welsh Language Council to concern itself with the welfare of the Welsh language in all walks of life.

Mr. Elystan Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what was the approximate amount spent by Her Majesty's Government on publishing Welsh forms of official documents in 1973.

Mr. Peter Thomas

I regret that this information is not readily available. To isolate the cost of all the Welsh versions of official documents produced by a variety of Government Departments in 1973 would involve a disproportionate amount of time and expenditure.
