asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will take steps to suspend the use of non-returnable bottles ; and what steps he is taking to encourage glass manufacturers to recycle containers for further use.

The recent report of the Glass Industry Working Party into the use and disposal of glass containers, including non-returnable bottles, is being studied by the Departments concerned. The glass industry has embarked on a programme aimed at significantly increasing the use of waste glass in the manufacture of glass containers, and at finding new uses for it in other fields.
