Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Minister for Energy what is the estimated saving in electricity consumption accruing from the closing down of all television at 10.30 p.m. ; and what would be the estimated saving if all daytime television were prohibited.

Mr. Emery

The estimated saving of electricity from closing down television is: after 10.30 p.m., 1 million units ; all day up to 5 p.m., 2 million units.

asked the Minister for Energy what is the estimated saving in electricity consumption of everyone following the Government's advice to clean his teeth in the dark, stop using electric dish washing machins and switch off refrigerators.

The hon. Member will realise that a large number of even small savings will total to make an appreciable amount of electricity saved. It is essential that, to keep industry on the fullest productive base possible, every type of domestic saving should be massively encouraged.
