HC Deb 01 February 1974 vol 868 cc175-6W
Mr. Whitehead

asked the Minister for Energy whether he is satisfied that the maximum retail prices for paraffin recommended in S.I., 1973, No. 2188 are being observed.

Mr. Emery

I am satisfied that on the whole the maximum retail prices for paraffin referred to by the hon. Member are being observed. I have had reports of a number of cases of overcharging but the total has been small in relation to the number of paraffin retailers. Because some of the overcharging might be due to ignorance of the statutory instrument an advertisement appeared in the national and main provincial newspapers earlier this week to give wider publicity to maximum permitted prices. Such publicity should help to reduce cases of overcharging.

Mr. Whitehead

asked the Minister for Energy how many complaints about retail paraffin prices have been received by the regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry in Nottingham since the commencement of the present emergency powers.

Mr. Emery

Twenty-one.
