HC Deb 20 December 1974 vol 883 c737W
Mr. David Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what representations she has received concerning the impact of the new level of social security contributions upon the clergy ; what consideration she has given to this matter ; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. O'Malley

Letters received from members of the clergy have mainly sought advice as to their position from April 1975 under the Social Security Act 1973. As I explained on 26th November, during the Report stage of the Social Security Amendment Bill, we are proposing that the clergy should remain self-employed contributors for an interim period of one year, as had been requested by the Churches Main Committee.—[Vol. 882, c. 347.]
