HC Deb 19 December 1974 vol 883 c599W
Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he has approved any experiments involving resurfacing of motorways to bring about a reduction in surface/tyre noise.

Mr. Carmichael

A short length of surfacing has been laid on Ml, near Watford Gap.

Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on departmental research into quieter road surfaces.

Mr. Carmichael

Studies are in progress to develop quieter surfaces which retain the advantages of skid resistance, spray control and longevity.

Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many miles of motorway have been resurfaced during each of the past three years.

Mr. Carmichael

As follows:

1972–73 55 miles
1973–74 50 miles
1974–75 53 miles

Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many miles of motorway will be resurfaced during each of the next three years.

Mr. Carmichael

1975–76 —91 miles. Lengths of road to be treated beyond this date cannot be given precisely. The overall length to be treated in 1976–77 and 1977–78 will probably be much the same as that for 1975–76.
