§ Mr. KaufmanPublic sector spending on housing in England and Wales, including new building, land purchase, subsidies, local authority home loans and improvement grants paid to private owners, rose from £542 million in 1963–64 to £2,030 million in 1973–74. In real terms expenditure approximately doubled. Comprehensive estimates of spending on private housing in England and Wales could not be made except at disproportionate cost.
