Mr. Sedgemore

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will publish such data as exist on the number of redundancies by regions for each month since January 1970.

Mr. Booth

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that records of redundancies due to occur in each month for the period January 1970 to April 1974 are available on the basis of the departmental administrative regions as they existed during that period. Since May 1974, records have been maintained for standard regions only and are not strictly comparable. The main differences are that the South Eastern and East Anglia Standard Regions cover broadly the same area as the old departmental London and South Eastern and Eastern and Southern Regions, and the East and West Midlands Standard Regions cover the same area as the departmental Midlands Region. Subject to the above the information is as follows:
