Mr. Buchanan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many Scottish schools were designated under the second designation scheme; how many teachers were affected; and what were the sums of money distributed (a) to individual categories of teachers per annum and (b) the total sum of money paid.

The second designation scheme has been extended by the Scottish Teachers' Salaries Committee until the Houghton Committee reports. 99 schools and about 4,800 teachers are at present involved. The amounts now payable are £213 per annum to secondary school teachers and £105 per annum to primary school teachers. The total cost in 1973–74 was about £900,000.

The annual sum available for the third designation scheme is £2.3 million, including the additional £1.2 million which I announced on 6th May for the benefit of areas where the education of children calls for special help. The distribution of this sum has not yet been determined by the Scottish Teachers' Salaries Committee which decided to renew consideration of the third scheme as soon as it receives the report of the Houghton Committee.
