HL Deb 17 December 1974 vol 355 cc1157-8WA

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Following the statement in The Times on 14th November 1974 that "Britain has agreed to a £7.6 million aid programme for Gibraltar over a 3-year period", whether they can give details of:—

  1. (a) the education and housing programmes;
  2. (b) the extension of the airport;
  3. (c) the provision of a recreation centre, and
  4. (d) technical assistance.

Our education and housing programme provides, inter alia, £1,878,000 for education, including a new girls' comprehensive school, a primary school for the Varyl Begg Estate, an extension to the College of Further Education, and a new school for handicapped children; £1,004,000 for the completion of the Varyl Begg Housing Estate; and £3,450,000 for new housing and repairs and modernisation of existing public housing.

My right honourable friend the Minister of Overseas Development has undertaken to consider fresh proposals for inclusion in the present programme for a recreation centre associated with the new girls' comprehensive school and for an extension to the airport building, when the detailed studies of these projects have been completed in Gibraltar.

Aid in the form of technical assistance will continue to be provided for Gibraltar, with increased provision for teacher training in the United Kingdom.

House adjourned at twenty minutes before nine o'clock.
