asked the Secretary of State for Defence what has been the real increase in defence spending when comparing 1973–74 with 1963–64.

Mr. John

There has been no increase. Substantial reductions in defence spending over this period both in terms of expenditure measured at constant prices and as a proportion of GNP were effected.
