HC Deb 13 December 1974 vol 883 cc269-70W
Mr. Alan Lee Williams

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of places available for industrial training under the Industrial Training Act in the London borough of Havering.

Mr. Harold Walker

I am advised by the Manpower Services Commission that the bulk of training carried out under the Industrial Training Act 1964 is done by employers on their own premises. The full extent of this training is not known. Industrial training boards set up under the Industrial Training Act 1964 can provide training places for employees within their scope and can co-operate with groups of employers to set up training places through group training schemes. The Manpower Services Commission tells me that information about these training places is not readily available and inquiries are being made. I will write to my hon. Friend when I have heard from the chairman.

Mr. Alan Lee Williams

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the number of places available for industrial training in Government centres in the London borough of Havering.

Mr. Harold Walker

I am informed by the Manpower Services Commission that there is no skillcentre in the London borough of Havering, but people wishing to train under the Training Opportunities Scheme (TOPS) can do so at the nearest centres at Poplar or Enfield, or at any other skillcentre. Courses under TOPS are also provided in colleges and approved employers' establishments, and people from the borough of Havering can attend suitable courses not only at the college in Havering and the adjacent Redbridge group but also at the many other colleges in the London area.
