HC Deb 02 December 1974 vol 882 cc345-57W
Mr. Gow

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total strength of the police force and of the Special Constabulary in England on 1st October 1973 and on the latest available date.

Dr. Summerskill

The strength of police forces in England was 93,502 on 1st October 1973 and 94,044 on 31st October 1974. The strength of the Special Constabulary was 23,704 on 31st December 1973, the latest date for which figures are available. I regret that figures for 1st October 1973 are not available.

Mr. Gow

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department by what num- European countries, respectively; and, if so, if he will publish these figures in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

Following the appeal by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the United Kingdom joined with other countries in accepting Chilean refugees. We agreed to consider applications sympathetically on their individual merits, subject to personal acceptability. Comprehensive information about the response of other countries is not available, but such information as is available suggests that the burden is being shared fairly equitably.

Mr. Trotter

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many Chilean refugees have (a) sought, (b) been granted and (c) been refused political asylum; and what were their nationalities.

Mr. Alexander W. Lyon

Following is the available information as at 22nd November 1974:

ber the strengths in England of the police and Special Constabulary were below established strength on the latest available date.

Dr. Summerskill

On 31st October 1974 police forces in England were 14,062 below an authorised establishment of 108,106. Chief officers of police are encouraged to recruit as many special constables as they can usefully employ.

Mr. Rathbone

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will publish the full complement numbers of police by rank for each police area.

Dr. Summerskill

Following are the authorised establishments of police forces in England and Wales:

The current pay scales, including payments for unsocial hours, are given below together with the cash increase granted since the previous review. The pay scales do not include (i) threshold payments which now amount to an additional £229.68 a year for all ranks and (ii) a London allowance of £201 payable from 1st April 1974.

Pay scales for ranks above chief superintendent were last reviewed on 1st July 1974. Because the method of calculating the salaries was changed and many of the police areas themselves changed as part of local government reorganisation, it is not possible to give general comparisons between 1973 and 1974 salaries, but the
