HC Deb 02 December 1974 vol 882 cc375-6W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what plans he has to increase the number of appointments in forensic psychiatry.

Dr. Owen

I have established three senior registrar posts to provide higher training in this new specialty.

Health authorities have been given permission to plan to increase the number of consultant general psychiatrists by 33 in 1974–75 and another 40 have been requested for 1975–76. Some of these may be expected to contribute to the forensic psychiatric services.

I share the Committee on Mentally Abnormal Offenders' hope that the establishment of regional security units will provide a further impetus for the development of this work.
